Scottish Battlefield's Wargames Show

To those who haven't already come in contact with me through email's various social media etc. I am currently helping to organise The Inaugural Scottish Battlefield's Wargames Show, to be held just a stones throw away from the initial Jacobite victory of the 1745 rebellion.

Why would a heritage organisation/charity dedicated to historical battlefields want to pursue such an event. Begging major battlefields such as Bannockburn, Culloden and Killiecrankie (Or Hastings, Bosworth and Naseby for those South of the Border) how many of the other contributory battles, that were just as important, but often get forgotten by history books, do we hear about? If we forget these battles and their landscapes, we dishonour the sacrifice and loss that the combatants gave, we lose the means to learn, exploit and harness our own heritage and history and thus psychologically this loss carries on further into other conservation pursuits with the loss of greenspace etc. History is not merely bound by the museum and dry books. It is also the pursuit and exploration of the landscape around us. By selling and applying to those already interested, the enthusiasts, in this case wargamers, they can bring further interest groups and individuals into the fold.

Why is battlefield walking important for wargaming? How can we accurately portray a period or battle in miniature without understanding the landscape, topography, local issues and limitations bounding a battlefield space. By protecting battlefields and the possible archaeological remains held within them, we create a resource that continues giving, by providing further information about how contemporary soldiers fought, or exploited their surroundings. Such eminent wargamers as Dr.s Chris Scott, Christopher Duffy, Donald Featherstone, Brigadier Peter Young and David Chandler as military historians and soldiers all understood this. Increasingly battlefield societies are also exploiting this as seen with Northampton, Naseby, Culloden and Prestonpans.

The event will be held at The Prestoungrange Gothenburg, 227 High Street, Prestonpans, East Lothian  EH32 9BE on Saturday February 20 2016 from 11am-4pm. Entry is £2, under 15's free
